CEMMAC Contributes to the R2 Kriváň–Mýtna Expressway: Quality Connecting Slovakia

The construction of new highways is more than an engineering project—it is an investment in the country's future. Every new section delivers faster and safer transport connections, eases congestion on existing roads, and creates new opportunities for regional development.

The R2 Kriváň–Mýtna Expressway is one such project, combining engineering precision, modern construction solutions, and high-quality materials. These elements ensure that this important transport link will serve motorists safely and reliably for decades to come.


Construction of the R2 Kriváň–Mýtna Expressway began in the spring of 2020, shortly after the construction contract was signed on 14 February with the consortium consisting of Doprastav, STRABAG, EUROVIA SK, and EUROVIA CS. Stretching 9.1 kilometres, the new section improves transport connections between central and southern Slovakia, reduces travel times, and significantly enhances road safety. Beyond easing traffic on existing routes, the expressway also supports regional economic development by improving access to the transport network, enabling more efficient logistics, faster deliveries, and new business opportunities.

From an engineering perspective, the project is particularly notable for its bridge structures. The route includes three viaducts, the most impressive of which extends approximately 4.36 kilometres and rises up to 45 metres above the surrounding terrain. This remarkable structure is not only a key functional element of the expressway but also a striking landmark. Its construction employed advanced engineering techniques, including balanced cantilever construction, launching gantries, and incremental launching methods, ensuring exceptional precision, long-term durability, and minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

The quality of the completed infrastructure is closely linked to the quality of the construction materials used. CEMMAC supplied approximately 73,000 tonnes of cement for the project, including 61,000 tonnes of CEM II/A-S 42.5 R, a high-performance cement designed for structures requiring rapid strength development and outstanding long-term durability.

This cement formed the foundation of the project's bridges, viaducts, and other major concrete structures. Its performance characteristics enabled faster construction progress while ensuring that the concrete will withstand demanding climatic conditions and heavy traffic loads for decades to come.

The supplied cement was used to produce approximately 200,000 m³ of concrete. To ensure maximum freshness and consistent quality, the concrete was produced on site at two dedicated batching plants located adjacent to the construction works. This approach eliminated the need to transport ready-mix concrete over long distances, reducing logistics costs, minimizing the risk of quality loss during transport, and lowering the overall carbon footprint of the project. Fewer truck movements also meant less traffic and a reduced environmental impact on nearby communities.
